Mary Ellen Anderton of Wigan, Lancashire, England to Indiana by Lisa Gaus

My g-g-grandmother was Mary Ellen Anderton, born September 21, 1852. According to family records, she lived at Larghes Cottage on Wigan Lane, Wigan, Lancahsire. She married William M. Myers on May 15. The year, however, is a family 'gray area'. It's either 1870 or 1881. It is most probably 1881. Their daughter, Sarah Anderton, was born in 1876.

William Myers was born April 17, 1847. He lived at Elms House on Wigan Lane. His father's name was Robert Myers. They emigrated to America in 1883 and first settled in Athens County, Ohio before moving to Terre Haute, Indiana. I can't seem to get further back than Mary Ellen on the Anderton side, or Robert on the Myers side. Mary Ellen was possibly illegitimate, too. Or perhaps because she had an illegitimate child, she left the 'old country' to begin a new life and didn't want to bring the past with her. I know nothing of her parents or siblings.

Recently, I was going through old family stuff and I came across a letter written to "Aunt Mary" from a nephew with the surname "Tonge" who had settled in New South Wales in Australia. I could not read his given name. He refers to a female relative (mother? wife? daughter?) as Angus (Agnes?). He wrote of having a hard life as a coal miner, which is another connection.
