  • Thomas A. Anderton from Chroley, Lancashire to Pennsylvania
from information provided by Norma M. Anderton & Deborah Anderton

Thomas A. Anderton was born in Chorley, Lancashire. He wetn to London and then to America in 1880's and settled in Oil City, PA. and his son, Thomas A. Anderton (the A stands for Augustus for one of them) eventually had an oil refinery - Continental Oil Refinery Co. (CORECO). John Rockefeller, the so-called philanthropist, offered to buy out the refineries, and most sold to him- my grandfather did not. The refinery failed in the late 20's when the depression put them completely out of business.

"Seven Anderton Brothers" from the Coal Mines of Wigan, Lancashire
to the Coal Mines of Pennsylvania
    by Richard L. Anderton

I am fascinated about the persistent story of "seven brothers" that came from "Wiggin" (Wigan), Lancashire to the coal fields of Pennsylvania in the early 1860's - this is a story that I heard from my Grandfather, Reuben John Anderton of Utah, and would like to know if there is any truth to what the old guy had to say, or did he make this up.
